eBay Users, How Many?
If you look at the number of users that eBay claims it shows something like 86 million. However, look at it a bit closer and you realize that they include all seller and buyer Ids. Many of us have more than one seller ID (I do) and a different buyer ID (I do). The REAL number of unique users is, therefore, somewhat lower.
Amazon claims 83 million users. That is a figure for registered buyers and sellers, like eBay. Unlike eBay it is rare for an Amazon user to have more than one account. Again it makes you wonder who is ahead in the world of ecommerce

What’s the advantage to having multiple sellers usernames? Why not just have different stores rather than multiple accounts? Why not sell everything under one name to take advantage of more sales, higher ratings, and more discounts (if/when you reach PowerSeller status)? What kinds of things are you selling that it requires you to keep everything separate?

Thanks for commenting. I user different user names for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I like my main seller account to be known for one range of products. I often look at a sellers feedback and if there are lots of different types of goods I wonder if he can really be an expert in the particular widget I am looking for. For example, I sell Zippos from one account and use another for other things , classified adds, and collectibles etc.
Many people use a different account so that a competitor can not see where on eBay they are buying stock. – A good place to buy stock either to sell on Amazon, or eBay itself is eBay!

Hi Phil – thanks for the follow up comment. Your response was pretty much what I was expecting. Indeed, purchasing off ebay is a great way to get started with your inventory. This is how I got started selling some items and I eventually moved into dealing directly with the manufacturers and wholesalers. Glad I found your site!
